OUR HISTORY

ARUBA'S FIRST KIWANIS CLUB

Kiwanis Club of Aruba was charted by Mr. Clinton Whitfield on February 20, 1965.

Clinton 'Clint' Whitfield Dec 06, 1910 - Jan 12, 1993. Mr. Clinton Whitfield was born on December 06, 1910 in Sint Eustatius, Netherlands Antilles. At a very young age his family moved to Curaçao where he grew up. It was in Curaçao that he met Ms. Mosa Davelaar, whom he later married.

Mr. Whitfield worked at the Ontvanger der Belastingen in Curaçao and was transferred to Aruba in 1935. Mr. Whitfield worked for a few years for the Government and then decided to start his own business.

He started a business in men’s apparel, Whitfield’s Shoppe, in Oranjestad with branches at various hotels. Mr. Whitfield not only became President of the Chamber of Commerce of Aruba but also of the Americas.

In late 1963 Mr. Clint Whitfield was approached by his friend Arthuro ‘Tula’ Jesurun, a member of the Rotary Club of Curaçao, with the question whether he was interested to start a Kiwanis Club in Aruba. Clint, being an active and dynamic person in the Aruban community, readily accepted the challenge. He started making his contacts and on November 21, 1964, the Kiwanis Club of Aruba was organized.

The sponsoring clubs were the Kiwanis Club of Curaçao and the Rideau Club in Canada. The Kiwanis Club of Aruba was chartered on February 20, 1965. The charter was presented at a Presentation Dinner at the Talk of the Town in Oranjestad on February 26, 1965. Fellow “K” Clint, as the first president of the Kiwanis Club of Aruba, received the charter from the immediate past Governor of the O.Q.M. District; now E.C. & C. District, fellow “K” Clarence F. Fentiman.

Fellow “K” Clint also served as a Lt. Governor in the Kiwanis Organization during the years 1968-1969; 1969-1970 (part time) and 1973-1974 (part time). Up to now he was the only Kiwanis member in our division to serve as Governor in 1978-1979 for the E.C. & C. District. For this position, fellow “K” Clint had to take up residence in Canada, always with Kiwanette Mosa Whitfield at his side. On January 12, 1993, our fellow “K” Clinton ‘Clint’ Whitfield passed away at the age of 82.

During our 50+ year history, our members have provided countless hours of service to children of our community.

Today our club remains vibrant, creative in purpose and is growing:  offering meetings and volunteer opportunities to fit your lifestyle and schedule.

Our members represent all walks of life, ages, and beliefs in a common bond of camaraderie, inclusion, and service. Our goal: making life better for the children and youth of our community - Where One Can Make a Difference.

We welcome you to join one of our meetings. Enjoy a timely, interesting speaker and explore the opportunities and enjoyment in becoming a member of the Kiwanis Club of Aruba. See you there...
